| Inside one of the most luxurious hotels in Isla Verde, there exists a beautiful bamboo-decorated paradise where the sake flows and the sushi’s always fresh. Its name is Yamato. Located on the first floor of El San Juan Hotel & Casino on Isla Verde Avenue, Yamato has been cooking up Teppanyaki and (not cooking up) sushi for 11 years, gaining its reputation as one of San Juan’s best Asian eateries. “We’re a fine restaurant,” says manager Johnny NG, referring specifically to Yamato’s quality of food and service, combined with its elegant ambiance. One of its specialties, teppanyaki, is a type of Japanese cuisine that cooks the food on an iron grill, although the North American version of this Japanese cooking style differs somewhat from its predecessor. Also known as hibachi, this type of cooking creates a personal dynamic between the chef and the customers, particularly because the food is cooked right at their table. And that’s exactly the way they do it at Yamato. People coming in to eat teppanyaki are seated around a table that has a grill in the center, with the chef as the main attraction. Teppanyaki dinner favorites include filet mignon, shrimp and other seafood. Customers can also combine two meat choices—like filet mignon and lobster tail—to create a special platter. The other main attraction at Yamato is the sushi bar, where head chef Miguel Peguera and other expert sushi chefs carefully prepare this Japanese delicacy before the customer’s eyes. Sushi-lovers can enjoy the traditional round and hand rolls, with special orders available upon request. Appetizers are also available at the Teppanyaki and Sushi Bar tables, with different soups, salads, tempura dishes, and other house specialties to choose from. Yamato also has a full bar. Yamato opens Mondays through Sundays from 6 pm- 11:30 pm. For more information, call the restaurant at (787) 791-8152, or the San Juan Hotel & Casino at (787) 791-1000. |
