In 2008, we are witnessing a metal renaissance
similar to the 1990’s, which gave birth to bands
like Puya, Sepultura, Korn and others. Unfortunately, major record labels and
radio stations still have their heads so far up reggaetons ass they have yet to
realize Puerto Rico has an incredible pool of talented metalcore bands, but
maybe it’s just not marketable in their eyes. Yet another example of this talent
pool is Brazos Caidos from Orocovis. The band has been together since 2003,
and with a heavy touring schedule and a united front, this wont be the last you’ll
hear from Brazos Caidos. Here is the 411 from cofounder Ricardo Castaneyra.
D.I.M. Where have all of the hardcore bands been hiding? It amazes us how many bands there are.
BRAZOS CAIDOS - Puerto Rico might be a small island, but it’s big enough to have so many great
Hardcore bands. The hardcore scene in Puerto Rico is growing every day, we are not hiding, we only need
some promotion and more venues to express our music and have a good time. The bands here are as
great as in the States, or anywhere, and this is evident in the shows we play and the unity of all the bands
and people is great. The most common place to find bands is in their garage on Saturdays, which is our
case as well as many others.
D.I.M. - Initial release?
BRAZOS CAIDOS - We have two singles recorded for different compilations. The first single was Reject
and it appears on Taking Back the Streets Vol. 1, recorded in HMNP Studios, and the second one was
Pain, for the United We Suck compilation recorded by Alcolado Music. Our first release is not official yet,
but we are planning to get into the studio to start recording, and we hope it comes out around late 2007.
You will be hearing more news about it soon.
D.I.M. - It’s a breath of fresh air to see a chick in a hardcore band. Does she pull her weight?
BRAZOS CAIDOS - When Angelica joined to the band she demonstrated to us that she can handle almost
anything. She learned the songs faster than anyone and her raw talent has made her play the songs very
fluent and easily. I think we are one of the fewer hardcore bands in Puerto Rico to have a chick, but that
doesn’t make us feel anything less, we are a strong band with a chick in it. You can see her and her heavy
sound at any Brazos Caidos show and see for yourself if she pulls her weight jeje.
D.I.M. - How did your show with in search of and the Blackout go. Any plans to tour the states?
BRAZOS CAIDOS - The show we played was in Ocean Front, Arecibo . The second show of the New
Jersey Hardcore Explotion, we were invited to perform by “El Perra”, a good friend of ours from San
Sebastian . The show was really nice, so many people from the hardcore scene showed up as well as
some friends. Brazos Caidos was the first band of the night and we feel people enjoyed us, like always,
evident is in the mosh pit. The other local bands were great too, and In Search Of and Blackout were
amazing. So much energy from those guys, the people really liked it, and you can see it by looking at the
dance floor. We hope some day to tour in the States, especially now having some friends up there like the
guys of In Search Of and Blackout.
D.I.M. - How long have you guys been playing together? What brought the band together?
BRAZOS CAIDOS - The band was formed in 2003 by Amaury Collazo and Ricardo Castaneyra. We had
an old project named Blasfemia, but it didn’t work out for us, so we decided to form a new band. Having
Amaury at vocals and Ricky on drums, we began looking for a guitar player, and Eli Barreto joined the
band, so we started making music. The genre of the band started very mixed, but at the end Hardcore and
Metal was the final product. We have been together for 4 years so far, and still united and sounding
stronger than ever. Our music make us feel like ourselves and the reaction from the people is the number
one reason keeping Brazos Caidos on the road.
D.I.M. - Who are the bands influences musically?
BRAZOS CAIDOS - As I Lay Dying, Unearth, Pantera, Metallica, Evergreen Terrace, Killswitch Engage,
Bleeding Through, All That Remains, All Shall Perish.
D.I.M. - Who was the first hardcore band from Puerto Rico you remember listening to. How did their music
affect you?
BRAZOS CAIDOS - The first hardcore bands we listened to was Druida, Machete, Perro Enfermo and
Golpe Justo. Listening to these bands marked the beginning of our musical influences of hardcore, and
this inspired us to start playing. Also, the reaction of the people and the power of the music is amazing.
D.I.M. - Props to other local hardcore bands?
BRAZOS CAIDOS - Pit Fight Demolition, Never Hold Back, Quejidos de Seol, Obey the Lie, Donnie
Brasko, Everyday’s Fight, GoodFellas, KDC.
D.I.M. Best song from Brazos Caidos?
BRAZOS CAIDOS - One of the most important songs for us is Infection, this song has been with us since
the beginning and is still on all of our set lists. If you listen to this song you can see the different influences
from metal to hardcore and some punk. Infection is Brazos Caidos theme song, I think, because it
represents all of us, all of the influences in music we have, and it talks about our music in society, like an
infection, that’s what they think.
D.I.M. - Thanks to:
BRAZOS CAIDOS - We would like to thank all of the people that have been with us since day one, our
families for their support and letting us practice, even they don’t like our the music. Thanks to God for his
strength, and most important to the people that come to our shows to support us and the Hardcore Scene
all over Puerto Rico .
