| Party with the locals |

| If you are near Ponce and want to see how the locals party, you should go to La Guancha on a Saturday night. You can also take a walk during the day, eat Puerto Rican fritters with a Piña Colada while you enjoy the view and the sea breeze. La Guancha is a long boardwalk at the Ponce Bay that has been a popular spot among the locals for many decades. It was restored during the 90’s to make it more attractive to tourists; and now it has a big parking lot, kiosks, platforms for live shows, benches and restrooms. During the day you can go up to a tower where you’ll get a great view of the bay and the Caribbean Sea. On a Saturday night you’ll get a glimpse of the many cultures fused in the Island. From youngsters dancing the newest songs of “reggetón”, hiphop, dance and others; to couples performing complex steps of salsa, merengue, bachata and many tropical rhythms. You can also take a disco-boat that will take you on a dance trip around the bay. During the day, especially on Sundays, families with young children go there with bicycles, skates, and any kind of rolling toys, since it is safe because there are no motor vehicles allowed. Another popular activity is feeding the fishes at the fishermen’s club. There are lots of really big fishes that expect visitors to throw sardines at them. Lately, birds like pelicans and seagulls hang around to catch a few bites too. This school of fishes got there after a hurricane and since then, the fishermen have been able to build a big club with the money they raised selling sardines to the curious who went to see the big fishes. The ambience is family oriented, even on nights there are lots of children, and the dress code goes from beachwear to whatever you feel like wearing. How to get to La Guancha: From Highway 52, follow the signs to Ponce Playa. |
