Spoken word meets urban and Latin rhythms in a new production by a Puerto Rican group called Tráfico Pesado, but it’s not just your typical hip-hop-meets-poetry type of album. That’s because Tráfico Pesado rose straight from the underground urban poetry scene –where open mic’s tend to be the only means through which hip new poets can express themselves– and the music element was only added later to emphasize the lyrics. “The most important aspect of this production is the words themselves, what the poet says,” explains Gilberto “GiLóDel” López, one of Tráfico Pesado’s poets and creators. “The rhythms only add to that.” The concept for Tráfico Pesado grew from the experiences of three poets who used every opportunity they could get to make themselves be heard. The trio composed of Gilberto López, Hermes Ayala and Edgardo Larregui eventually got together with the owner of studio Track G, Gabriel “Gabo” Suárez, who became their producer and musical director. Other notable band members are Danel “Danelectro” Pérez and Federico “Fico” Ausbury. And what originally started off as the musings of three struggling artists slowly became a project, recruiting different musicians for the band and finally taking shape in the form of Tráfico Pesado in October 2006. The outcome has been classified as “nova-hop trova” because it mixes poetry with different rhythms, hip hop being the predominant one, but also including bomba, salsa, rock and roots. Their first album, A chavito pelado, can be purchased in most big music stores in Puerto Rico (like La Gran Discoteca, Pentagrama and Music Zone) or downloaded from i-Tunes. Upcoming shows for Tráfico Pesado include March 8 at the Nuyorican Café in Old San Juan, beginning at 10 pm, and March 24 at the Tito Puente Amphitheater in Hato Rey, where they will be opening a concert for the famous reggae band, Midnite. They will also be playing at Taller Cé in Río Piedras on April 28, starting around 10 pm. For more information, check out their MySpace page at www.myspace. com/traficopesado where you can download more information and history on the band and its members as well as preview songs from the latest release A Chavito Pelado.
